Preventive medicine is the cornerstone of how we keep pets healthy at Ramtown Animal Hospital. Dogs and cats can't tell us when something feels off, and many serious conditions like dental disease, kidney problems, heart murmurs, and early stage cancer show subtle signs years before they become emergencies. A routine wellness visit is how we catch those things while they're still inexpensive and easy to treat.
What's Included in a Wellness Visit
Every preventive exam at Ramtown includes a thorough complete physical performed by Dr. Demian. We use this time to talk through what you're seeing at home (changes in eating, drinking, energy, bathroom habits, or behavior) because you know your pet better than anyone.
- Full physical exam - covering heart, lungs, abdomen, skin, coat, ears, eyes, teeth, joints, and lymph nodes
- Weight tracking - to catch gradual changes that signal metabolic or nutritional issues
- Vaccine review - tailored to your pet's lifestyle, not a blanket protocol. See our full vaccinations page for details on core vs. lifestyle vaccines
- Parasite screening - including heartworm testing and intestinal parasite checks
- Bloodwork recommendations - based on age, breed, and any concerns we identify
- Dental assessment - to determine whether a cleaning is due. Learn more on our dental care page
- Personalized recommendations - covering diet, exercise, and supplements specific to your pet
Tailored to Your Pet's Life Stage
A puppy's wellness visit looks very different from a senior dog's. We adjust the focus, the diagnostics we recommend, and the frequency of visits based on where your pet is in life.
Puppies & Kittens (0 to 1 year)
Frequent visits during the first year to complete vaccine series, deworm, microchip, spay or neuter, and start lifelong habits around handling, dental care, and nutrition. This is the most important year of preventive care your pet will ever have.
Adult Pets (1 to 7 years)
Annual wellness visits to maintain vaccines, monitor weight and dental health, and screen for early signs of common conditions. We adjust parasite prevention seasonally and review nutrition as your pet matures. Depending on your individual pet, we may also recommend annual bloodwork (chemistry, CBC, thyroid, and urinalysis) well before the senior years to establish a baseline and catch issues early.
Senior Pets (7+ years)
More frequent visits because pets age much faster than humans, with a year for a senior dog being the equivalent of 4 to 7 human years. We typically add or increase the frequency of senior bloodwork panels (including liver, kidney, and thyroid values), urinalysis, and blood pressure checks. The exact recommendations depend on your pet's history, breed, and current health rather than a fixed protocol.
Parasite Prevention
Howell's woods, parks, and backyards are full of fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, and intestinal parasites. We recommend year round prevention because New Jersey's mild winters no longer guarantee a break. Our preventive recommendations cover:
- Heartworm prevention - transmitted by mosquitoes, fatal if untreated, easily prevented with monthly medication
- Flea & tick control - protection against Lyme, Anaplasmosis, Ehrlichiosis, and other tick borne illnesses common in NJ
- Intestinal parasites - routine deworming and fecal screening to catch hookworms, roundworms, giardia, and others
Why prevention matters: Heartworm treatment is a long ordeal that requires strict crate rest, multiple painful injections, and carries real risk for the dog. Heartworm prevention is a single monthly chew. The difference for your pet's quality of life is enormous, and the prevention is something we feel strongly about for every dog in our care.
Nutritional Counseling
Pet food marketing is overwhelming and frequently misleading. We help you cut through it and choose food that actually fits your pet's life stage, weight, activity level, and any medical conditions. We'll also help with portion sizing because the number one cause of preventable health problems in pets is being overweight, and most owners genuinely don't realize their pet has crept up.
Why Ramtown for Preventive Care
We're a solo practice, which means you see Dr. Demian every visit. She knows your pet by name, remembers what you talked about last time, and has the continuity to spot changes that a rotating team would miss. We don't upsell, we don't lay on the guilt, and we'll never recommend a test we wouldn't run on our own pets.
